Countdown to My First 45K: Ultrarunning with Type 1 Diabetes

In about 18 weeks, I’ll be taking on a significant challenge: the Göteborg Trailrun 45 km. This race will not only mark my first official entry into the world of ultrarunning, but it will also be a substantial test of my endurance and management of type 1 diabetes.

The race, the longest of four happening on the outskirts of Gothenburg on September 7, 2024, will push my limits in ways I’ve yet to experience. Last year’s race, captured in the video below, showcases the beautiful but (to me) demanding terrain of the track.

Navigating this journey from my casual running routine to structured ultra training is both daunting and thrilling. I’m starting almost from scratch, and I’m currently concerned about potential injuries and the very inherent risk of overtraining of which I’ve already fallen prey to more than once. I’ll be sharing the strategies I’m adopting to train effectively and safely with my diabetes in future posts.

I’m eager to bring you along on this adventure—through the highs, the lows, and everything in between. If you’ve tackled similar challenges or have insights on balancing intense physical activity with health management, please share your thoughts below!
